Azzedine Alaïa is a famous Tunisian master couturier, adored for his beautiful fitting silhouettes and known as the "King of Cling," "The Master of Cut and Fit," "A Sculptor." Alaïa was born in the capital city Tunis, Tunisia, in 1935. Since his childhood, he became deeply interested in art and design. At the age of 22, young Alaïa moved to Paris and started to design for some of the most notable names in the fashion industry at the time, including Christian Dior, Guy Laroche, and Thierry Mugler.
In the late ‘70s, Azzedine Alaïa opened an atelier in his small Parisian apartment and presented his first ready-to-wear collection, where he used smooth materials like velvet, stretch wool, Lycra bandages, and leather – lots of it, punched with patterns like lace or embellished with silver-tone inlays/eyelets. Since then Azzedine Alaïa became an icon in women's fashion, creating for some of the world's most fabulous and fashionable women.
By the end of the ‘80s, Azzedine Alaïa opened his own boutiques in New York, Beverly Hills, and Paris. The designer’s clinging, seductive silhouettes were a massive success. Among his most loyal fans were the world’s most famous fashionistas and celebrities, including Tina Turner, Grace Jones, Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Carine Roitfeld, Janet Jackson, Franca Sozzani.
The Great Couturier died in Paris, in 2017, at the age of 82. Till the end, Azzedine Alaïa remained true to its original philosophy – to make women beautiful and happy – “I think women should be seductive, not triste. There’s enough sadness in life now without making women look sad, too.”
